Leon Meers has for many years been known in the South-East Limburg region as a leading specialist with young pigeons and as the man behind strings of top results in speed racing. In his search for pigeons suited to the middle distance, and more specifically for national races with young pigeons, he came into contact with Pitts driving force Gert Van Limbergen. As a true middle-distance virtuoso, Gert has earned many distinctions over the past decade — something that certainly did not escape Leon’s attention.
Plans for a collaboration were quickly made, and in 2024 the first young pigeons moved from Lede to Rijkhoven. This combination of Van Limbergen’s top breeding loft and Meers’ know-how soon proved to be a golden hit, with a chain of outstanding results and numerous first prizes, including the 1st semi-provincial ace pigeon long distance youngsters and, among others, a semi-provincial victory from Sens against 1,200 young pigeons.
Originally, the intention at the Meers loft was to race only young pigeons, but after consultation it was decided to retain a few yearlings to continue racing. However, space is extremely limited, the quality exceptionally high, and the selection particularly strict. Only 5 yearling cocks will be retained for 2026, specifically those intended for the national races.
Several top performers, as well as some very promising young pigeons that did not complete the full program due to moulting, will now go under the auction hammer. Through Pitts, fanciers are now given the opportunity to acquire proven performance pigeons from top bloodlines for their own lofts. Good luck to all buyers!
