13-01-25 Announcement – UNESCO Recognition
In response to the various inquiries from our enthusiasts regarding the recognition of pigeon racing in Belgium as cultural heritage, the KBDB established a working group in September 2024 that is to take the necessary steps and bring this special mission to a successful conclusion.
The working group, composed of volunteers from all walks of life who share an interest in our passion, has met monthly since then and is committed to successfully completing this time-consuming task.
The KBDB is aware of the importance of such recognition by UNESCO:
- It will present pigeon racing as an essential part of Belgian cultural identity and give an international aspect to the practice of pigeon racing while highlighting its role in local history and culture.
- It will ensure that pigeon racing is preserved as a living tradition and promote the preservation of knowledge, skills, and practices related to breeding and organizing races of racing pigeons, while encouraging the transfer of this knowledge to future generations.
- It will certainly enhance the image of Belgium, the cradle of pigeon racing, as a country that wishes to keep its traditions and heritage alive.
- It will undoubtedly provide support to pigeon racing associations and enthusiasts by drawing the government's attention to the need to consider measures for the preservation of existing heritage and support for young enthusiasts.
