Strategy
The strategy of the champion from St-Truiden is well-known: buying eggs and late young ones from the absolute top lofts of Belgian pigeon racing.
Thus, Roger has pigeons from among others Jos Thoné, Caesaert-Senechal, Patricia Verhaegen, Erwin Geeraerts, Chris Cleirbaut, Verreckt-Ariën, Gebrs. Herbots, Guido Loockx, Karlo Van Rompaey, Vanoppen-Luyten, Wim Kempeneers, Gino Clicque, Dirk Verstichelen, etc. .. But also from his own old strain, top performers come yearly.
With this foundation, it is no wonder that in recent years top performances were achieved: First semi-national champion young pigeons of Club de Fond Wallonie, Limburg champion young pigeons fond, 1st and 2nd asduif yearlings fond and third champion of Limburg yearlings fond, first asduif light fond old South-East Limburg and federal Sint-Truiden, first general asduif federal Sint-Truiden and first asduif in the Trudo association, sixth semi-national asduif old pigeons on the light fond. All titles that confirm the quality at the lofts of Roger.
One Loft races
Roger, together with his friend Jan Leyen (Maaseik), has also become somewhat of a specialist in one-loft races. In 2015, 'Terres' – bred by Roger – won the heavy Derby Arona one-loft race in Tenerife. In the same race, 'Leonardo' became 3rd international asduif.
Also in the final of the one-loft race in Bulgaria, flown under tropical weather conditions, Roger was the only Belgian participant who could clock two pigeons on the day of the release.
In the semi-final of Derby Arona Tenerife 2016, a group of friends, of which Roger is a part, won a super-luxury Mercedes for the second time in a few months...

Gunther Smet (Lokeren) won 1st Interprovincial Jarnac and 1st + 2nd prov. Jarnac. Both pigeons were bred from a direct pigeon of Roger Mertens.
