Why?

In order to quickly contact the owner and return the lost pigeon to its loft as soon as possible.

Furthermore, we must note that more and more non-pigeon enthusiasts are capturing lost pigeons. For them, a ring with the owner's phone number is a useful tool to get in touch with the owner.
