Small Basket

With only 15 widowers and 20 flying hens, we can confidently call the cheerful Etienne Moeraert the man with the small basket. With this limited flying team, he competes the males every two weeks and the hens every three weeks on the light long-distance, each time alternating with a sprint flight. About 4 pigeons stay on the half long-distance.

The old and yearlings are darkened until April 10, the hens are paired, allowed to breed for a few days, and then put on widowhood. Before the start of the season, a veterinarian is consulted to ensure the flying team starts the season fresh. Both the young and old pigeons are vaccinated 3 times against paratyphoid and paramyxovirus.

Nutrition is considered very important at Moeraert-Standaert: not too heavy, but just enough! In the last days, some energy-rich food and extra peanuts are given. Tea is put in the loft weekly for 2 days, along with plenty of apple cider vinegar.

“The main thing is to start with good pigeons; investing in pigeon sport is the best thing you can do, and you will quickly reap the rewards,” says Etienne.

Annually, about 100 young pigeons are bred, which are immediately strictly selected: “they must meet all criteria before they enter the basket, which results in few losses during training.” Etienne races them using a sliding door and darkens until mid-June. This year, they were also artificially lit for the first time until the end of the season.
