For years, this father-son combination was among the favorites weekly in the sprint and small middle distance races. Father Lucien knew the tricks of the trade like no other and was always responsible for daily care. On weekends and days off, Johan (64) took over. However, last year on March 22, Lucien passed away at the age of 88.
Johan: "2023 and 2024 became quite a challenge, especially since my mother has also passed away in the meantime. Therefore, the focus has not always been on pigeon racing... Since this year, I have retired, and that is of course quite a relief because I can now make more time to work with the pigeons. My father, Lucien, had been playing with pigeons since he was 12. He has always belonged to the better fanciers, and I hope to continue this tradition without him.”
Total Widowhood
In the Vandebroek household, mainly sprint and small middle distance races are played, i.e., the flights up to about 450km. The gaming system consists of motivating the pigeons in total widowhood, but up to a certain extent, as some widowhood males or racing hens do have a fixed partner that stays at home. The flying team for 2025 consists of 24 widowhood males and about 20 racing hens. Approximately 100 rings are ordered each year, worn by youngsters from the 1st, 2nd, and to a lesser extent, a few from the 3rd round. These are bred from about 25 breeding pairs, with the foundation consisting of the lines from Louis Keirsmaekers (Nijlen), Walter Lambeets (Aarschot), Patricia Verhaegen, Leo Heremans, and recently Georges De Keyser (Messelbroek) and Peter Celis (Zolder).
Experience for Young Pigeons
The youngsters are generally raced from the sliding door. "They need the necessary experience to become widowhood racers, but they are certainly not overworked," says Johan. To gain the necessary experience, they are darkened but not lit. They are taken away a few times themselves and from then on race with the organization. As mentioned earlier, there has been little room lately for the young pigeons, so the focus was entirely on the old and yearlings. These are only released once or twice, then they go directly with the organization to the race.
'Little Medication Results in Strong Pigeons'
The veterinarian only comes for mandatory vaccinations. The only treatment on the schedule is a tricho treatment before the breeding season and one before the racing season. Johan: “A sick pigeon is removed unless it’s a really good one; then we will call the veterinarian. We believe that good results can also be achieved with simple guidance. By that, I mean without all those complicated feeding schedules, visits to the vet, and all sorts of tricks that might confuse the pigeons. Quality, motivation, and health of the pigeon are the most important parameters for achieving good results in all races. If the lofts are good, the pigeons will not get sick quickly, and there is also no need to visit the vet all the time. As for motivation, everyone must define that for themselves. A box, a strange pigeon in the basket, or sometimes just one perch can be enough.” Depending on the season, the feed mixtures (Versele Laga or mixed) are adjusted at Vandebroek: sport, molt, breeding, or cleansing, and as by-products only natural ones like garlic and apple vinegar.
Strong at Home and Beyond
The pigeons of Johan Vandebroek and the late Lucien not only perform well at their own loft but have also achieved great references at other lofts. They were the suppliers of the 1st Provincial As Pigeon Young Speed and the 2nd National As Pigeon Young Speed KBDB 2014 via a male pigeon that was picked up at Vandebroek as a bonus. They also have Vandebroek blood in the 1st National As Pigeon Young Speed KBDB 2019 via a hen sold at the Pitts auction 2018!

- Jean Connaert (via Mark Dirix) achieved a provincial victory with a descendant of the Vandebroek loft.
- Furthermore, a 1st prize winner (Sermaises) against more than a thousand pigeons at Walter Lambeets (Aarschot), again with a young pigeon bred from a hen purchased at the Pitts auction in 2017.

This means that we now have to compete from a very unfavorable position against the competition located in the west. Our loft is situated in the far east of the West Sector. Nevertheless, this year we still achieved 6 x 1st prizes within the Great Regional West competition."
