As with many pigeon enthusiasts, the story of Luc & Dries begins with earlier generations. Georges Bombeke, the father of Luc, was already playing with the pigeons and passed on the passion. Dries, who in turn caught the passion from his father, still lives at home and has taken over the loft of his grandfather Aimé Glorieux, who lives next door. Thus, in the Bombeke household, pigeon sport remains a true family sport.
At Luc's place, the pigeons are housed in garden lofts, the old and yearlings, about 20 males and 32 females are played on the classic widowhood system. Since 2022, they have also been playing with 1 loft of females on the day distance, but this game is still in its infancy. The first round of young birds goes to Luc and is played here on the sliding door. Dries then focuses mainly on the old and yearling pigeons. Since starting in an open aviary in 2022, they have also been competing in the heavy middle distance and, starting in 2023, on a total widowhood basis. Dries aims to eventually target the heavy distance races and international flights as well. This is, of course, a multi-year plan. The young birds from the second round end up with Dries and primarily serve as reserves and are only trained properly.
The breeds found with Luc & Dries:
Original breed Bombeke Luc. In 2006, 2 top breeders and also the founders of the current breed were obtained from Guido Van Caneghem.
Later, they also received quite a few pigeons from Bauters Jo, known for his Fabian. Direct children of this top pigeon are included.
Later in 2016, some pigeons were also obtained from Friend Tom Van Gaver. They received some eggs from yearlings. These yearlings later grew into icons like Finn, Magic Bart, grandchildren Ricky, White Finn,….
Through friendship with Tom Van Gaver, Dries befriended Bart Geerinckx, from whom some pigeons were then acquired through a voucher, including a grandchild Gladiator.
In 2019 and 2023, several vouchers/eggs were purchased from Gino Clicque, including grandchildren of Golden Prince, Prince Rudy, national winners, and national champions.
Through working at BRICON, pigeons were obtained from Team Baetens, including a brother of the 5th national champion ‘214’ and children of RAX, the 2nd national champion.
For the heavy distance, pigeons have also been obtained from Molenaar, the 1st national champion, from Camiel Van De Sande over the last few years.
System for Old & Females
Luc's system: The actual old pigeons are paired together with the breeders and produce a couple of young ones. The yearling pigeons are not paired for winter breeding (because the young are given extra lighting, they are not yet fully through the molt at that time). Before the season, all males are then paired the last weekend of March to breed and learn for about 10 days. From then on, the classic widowhood begins.
The flying females are paired the first weekend of April and remain together until the end of breeding.
Dries's system: The pigeons at Dries breed the second round from the breeders and are thus paired the first weekend of January. They are then released. Afterward, they remain separated until learning, and then they are together again for 4 days.
The males of Dries and Luc train together as well as the females. Training starts in early March, and they like to see that by the time of pairing, they should have trained for about +/- 45 minutes. The pigeons of Luc then go together, those of Dries no longer. The pigeons of Dries are played on total widowhood. After laying, the groups are released together again, but they notice that the pigeons that are on eggs have a very strong desire to train at that moment, and in April, the basis for what is to come in May is laid regarding condition.
The training of the old ones goes relatively quickly as both go to work. Usually 1 time at 10 km and 1 time at 20 km before flying with the organization Doornik or directly to Noyon.
System for Young Pigeons
Early young pigeons are bred (the first round goes to the lofts at Luc), these are vaccinated against Paramixo Rota at the end of February and against pox two weeks later. Only the first round is darkened from the hour change at the end of March until June 21. They also light them up from the longest day, which they continue until the end of the season.
The young pigeons from the first round are encouraged to fly for +/-10 minutes from the beginning of March; once they do this for 3 days, they start doing it themselves and train for a while for 45 minutes up to 1 hour. It sometimes happens that they are already flying for up to 1 hour and 30 minutes in April, and if they are away for a long time, you know they are ready to go in the training basket. The training is done step by step from 5 km – 10 km -15 km -20 km (Ronse). They usually don’t fly further; from then on, the young ones go with the organization to Doornik (45 km); this is usually done 2 times, however, for the last 2 years, they were entered for Niergnies as a training flight instead of the second time Doornik. Afterwards, they usually go about 2 to 3 times to Noyon interprovincial to gain some experience and are ready for what is to come. As motivation, they play this round on the sliding door. The pigeons start widowhood in early July until the end of the season.
The second round, which is not darkened and is in the aviary, is handled much less carefully. This year they were only entered by themselves 3 times and then went to Doornik (2 times) and from there immediately to Noyon interprovincial, resulting in very few losses.
