Who doesn't know the name Jens Van Cutsem by now? In Idegem, a district of Geraardsbergen and home to Jens's speed rockets, astonishing results are achieved weekly. The small middle-distance is the favored playground; not only locally but also in the strong collaboration "Hafo Dender," where they compete weekly for the main prize. Even when Jens sends his pigeons on a provincial flight, their class shines through, as proven by "Febeke," but other top prizes have also come his way. These results logically lead to various championship and ace pigeon titles.
History
As a young lad, Jens was already found at the lofts of his grandfather and father, both pigeon enthusiasts. Thus, the pigeon passion has been passed down from generation to generation. In 2018, he started independently with pigeons for the first time. The foundation then was formed with the strain of his grandfather and father, supplemented over the years with pigeons from various pigeon fanciers. Among the names found in the family trees are: Van Isseghem Norbert, Dehandschutter Kristof, De Blander William, D’Hoker Alain, Van Gaver Tom, De Maeseneer Philip, Weemaels Kurt & Dirk, Deneys Dimitri, and Appelmans Peter. The latter is Jens's uncle, where the breeders are housed and where the young birds from later rounds are tested.
Stock
With 12 pairs of breeders producing around 50 to 60 young pigeons, 16 widowers, and 30 flying hens, we can speak of a limited colony here. According to Jens, this is one of the important things to succeed in modern pigeon sports: “Strictly select, focus on one discipline, and do not keep a mass of pigeons.”
Game System
The 16 widowers and flying hens are played on total widowhood, leading to 14 hens without a flying partner. These hens are then paired with staying male pigeons and played on the classic widowhood. For a race, the partners are not shown so that they enter the basket as calmly as possible. Upon returning home, they may then be close together, and as the season progresses, this continues for longer periods. Around December 6, Jens pairs all flying pigeons, and they are allowed to raise a nest of young. When these young are weaned, the hens go into the run, and the males remain in the loft where breeding took place. From then on, training can begin. In about six steps, the pigeons are trained and ready for the big basket. During the season, the pigeons train once daily, and if necessary, this is done with a flag.
The young pigeons are weaned at around 23 days and are darkened from early March but not given additional light afterwards. The training of the young is done in ten steps to then join the big basket. Young males and young hens are separated after the sprint races and are played separately afterwards. The focus here is primarily on the old pigeon play.

At Luc Wasteels, BE22-4111984 “Plastronske” won no less than 9 times 1st prize from Noyon. This speed devil has a direct mother from Jens Van Cutsem. The father of this pigeon, “Vieze Grijze,” is a full brother of Jens's “Keti.” The “Vieze Grijze” has already bred some champions at Jens.
Another pigeon that did remarkably well at Luc Wasteels was BE22-4111986.
