Who doesn't know the name Jens Van Cutsem by now? In Idegem, a district of Geraardsbergen and home to Jens's speed rockets, weekly incredible results are achieved. The small middle distance is the favored playground, not only locally but also in the strong cooperation “Hafo Dender,” where competition for the main bird occurs weekly. Even when Jens participates in a provincial race, their class shines through, as proven by “Febeke,” but many other top prizes have also come his way. These results naturally lead to various championship and best pigeon titles.
History
As a young lad, Jens was often found at the lofts of his grandfather and father, both of whom were pigeon enthusiasts. Thus, the pigeon passion was passed down from generation to generation. In 2018, he started independently with the pigeons. The foundation was built from the strain of his grandfather and father, supplemented over the years with pigeons from various fanciers. The pedigrees include names such as: Van Isseghem Norbert, Dehandschutter Kristof, De Blander William, D’Hoker Alain, Van Gaver Tom, De Maeseneer Philip, Weemaels Kurt & Dirk, Deneys Dimitri, and Appelmans Peter. The latter is Jens's uncle where the breeders are located, and where the youngsters from later rounds are tested.
Stock
With 12 pairs of breeders producing around 50 to 60 young pigeons, 16 widowers, and 30 flying hens, one can speak of a limited colony here. According to Jens, this is one of the important aspects for success in contemporary pigeon sport: “Strictly selecting, focusing on one discipline, and not keeping a mass of pigeons.”
Playing System
The 16 widowers and flying hens are played on total widowhood, leaving 14 hens without flying partners. These hens are then paired with staying males and played in classical widowhood. Partners are not shown before a race so they enter the basket as calmly as possible. Upon returning home, they are allowed to be close together briefly, and as the season progresses, this time is gradually extended. Around December 6, Jens pairs all flying pigeons, and they are allowed to raise a nest of young. When these young are weaned, the hens go into the aviary while the males remain in the loft where they were bred. From then on, training can begin. In about six steps, the pigeons are prepared, and they are ready for the big basket. During the season, the pigeons train once a day, and if necessary, this happens with a flag.
The young pigeons are weaned around 23 days and are darkened from early March, but are not given additional light afterward. The training of the youngsters happens in about ten steps before they can join the big basket. Young males and hens are separated after the sprint races and then played separately. The focus here is definitely more on the old pigeon game.
