Deneys Dimitri, a longtime established name in the Pajottenland. This top loft seems to become stronger year after year. Where the emphasis used to be on speed and small middle distance, the focus has now shifted to heavy middle distance. And how, with among others a 1st Zonaal B1 Bourges & fastest of 8361 pigeons in 2021 and many more impressive results.
Residing in Liedekerke, Flemish Brabant, and working as a project officer at BNP Paribas Fortis, Dimitri is a third-generation pigeon fancier. As a toddler, he climbed the stairs to reach the attic lofts of grandfather Achilles βJulesβ Deneys, who played together with Dimitri's father, Ivan. It was here that the pigeon virus took hold of him. At grandfather Jules and father Ivanβs, speed flights took precedence. This changed in 2010 when they started racing under their own name. In those early years, the focus remained on speed, but the small middle distance also became their playground. After years of dominance, they decided to shift their focus to heavy middle distance starting in 2020.
The strain of pigeons that Dimitri can rely on for these races is based on the following fanciers:

Small basket
The racing season starts with only 8 cocks and 15 racing hens. The cocks, each allowed to rear 1 young bird, are paired so that these young coincide with the 2nd round of the breeders. They are not darkened or lit and for their first race, they are taken out about 4/5 times to a maximum of 25 km. After that, they go into the large basket and the season can begin. The start of the season somewhat depends on the weather; efforts are always made to start so that the pigeons have completed 2 small middle distance races before heading to the national races. The training of the cocks is done without flags and is increased in duration towards the day of entry. The evening training before the entry day is seen as the most important, as it shows whether the pigeons are ready for their task. The cocks are kept in the traditional widowhood with staying partners. During the season, they feed the pigeons using a mix of an all-round mixture, super diet, and a sport mixture from the brands Paloma, Vanrobaeys, and Beyers, and this is done individually in their bowl. The racing pigeons also receive electrolytes twice a week and homemade tea from βDe Gustβ in their water twice a week. Other supplements include primarily brewer's yeast, vitamin mineral mix, grit mix, mineral stones, and power mix.
The racing hens are, unlike the cocks, darkened and played under the classic widowhood system with staying partners. For the last national races, they try to enter them while on a nest. The ducks' training is done with flags when necessary. Meanwhile, the hens are taking over, leading Dimitri to gradually reduce the number of cocks. Dimitri: βWe have the impression that with the hens, we can race more and longer in the heavy middle distance races during the season.β
The system with the young is based on the sliding door. From mid-March, the young are darkened until the longest day of the year, starting at 5 PM, so that the young wake up with daylight. The training of the young occurs once a day and casually. When all the young start to fly well, the 2 rounds are released together. Once they sufficiently disperse, they are brought to the training baskets and fly about 6 times from 2 km to 25 km, after which they go into the large basket to fly 60 km. Once competing, they are played in widowhood on the sliding door and come together for about half an hour before entry. When pairs form, these are taken away and placed in the basket, while the unpaired pigeons can stay in the loft longer to find a partner in peace. The emphasis here is still on playing with the old birds, but the young are still given enough experience to fly a few national races.
For the medical aspect, they visit veterinarian Bjorn Geeroms for both racing and breeding seasons. Mandatory vaccinations for paramyxovirus are also done here. The young are vaccinated for the first time at 6 weeks old, and are also immediately vaccinated against smallpox (brush). A second vaccination occurs 3 to 4 weeks later.
When asked what Dimitri thinks is important to race well, he replied: βFirst and foremost, the pigeon itself; they need to be capable. Care and regularity (everything on time) is of course an important factor, and the motivation of the pigeon should not be underestimated. If you can motivate a pigeon sufficiently, it can rise above itself at the right moment and achieve phenomenal performances. That they have mastered this here in Liedekerke is evidenced more than sufficiently by the results.
