Last summer, this tandem once again shattered just about everything with their young pigeon team. They also ended the season in style as champions of young pigeons in the sprint and the half-fond in Houthulst. The competition is fierce there in Zarren!

History

Leander Demeulemeester (41) made his first contact with pigeon racing through his grandfather Henri, with whom he went to the lofts as a young boy. At home with father Erik, there was no mention of pigeons at first, until one evening he came home to find a small loft built in the wood store, equipped with some young pigeons from grandfather. Erik also got the taste for it and still participates with the pigeons to this day.

Meanwhile, Leander and his partner Ellen form this successful tandem and focus on racing young pigeons in sprint and half-distance races.

 

Focus on Young Pigeons

Proven breeds like Willy Claeys (Handzame), Pacqueu-Bogaert (Handzame), Annick Goeteyn (Deinze), and Mark Janssens (Herk-de-Stad) form the basis of this colony. 21 breeding pairs are paired at the end of November, depending on the weather, resulting in two rounds of about 40 young pigeons. These youngsters are kept in darkness from March 1 to the end of May starting at 5 PM. When it's dark, the curtains and shutters are opened to ensure optimal ventilation in the garden lofts. After this period of darkness, lighting is provided from the longest day of the year until the end of the season, from 5 AM to 10:30 PM. Motivation is achieved according to the sliding door system, and as the season progresses, they furnish the loft with extra boxes and corners to motivate further. Training is done in small steps: 2 km – 4 km – 6 km – 10 km – 20 km and then to Le Touquet (40 km) and Arras.

 

Nutrition and Health

The mixtures from Versele-Laga are trusted: 2/3 sport + 1/3 low protein. On the last day before basketing, the low-protein part is replaced with ‘Energy’. ‘Health Elixir’ from Aïdi is regularly given over the feed, and the system of Dr. Brockamp is followed.

Veterinarian Marc Huyghe (Bovekerke) is responsible for necessary vaccinations and checks if something seems wrong. Generally, there is a treatment planned every 4 weeks during the season against trichomoniasis or to keep the heads clean. Even after an extra day in the basket, there might still be additional treatment against trichomoniasis.
