How it began
The combination Gebr. Wiersma has officially existed since early 2020. It is formed by Wessel and Gerrit Wiersma, aged 32 and 36 respectively. Before this, it was mainly the late Henk Wiersma who was in charge of the breeding center and participated in the races. Gerrit works as a graphic designer and web developer and was involved in pigeon sport from a young age but unfortunately had to temporarily stop active participation due to his busy studies. As a result, father Henk, also due to illness, was forced to stop participating in the pigeon flights and focused on breeding top pigeons, with success! Many fanciers have already succeeded with the pigeons of Henk Wiersma, now known as "KC de Walden". He joyfully did this for many years until early 2018 when he passed away after a brief illness. At that time, after a large sale, it was decided to continue the life’s work of father Wiersma and to rebuild the breeding center. Later, since 2021/'22, it was also decided to participate again in the racing flights.
“We mainly focus on long-distance racing but also have a good breeding loft for the shorter sprint distances. This is also evident from the references of the past years. During the rebuilding of the breeding center and a new loft inventory, we retained some of the best breeding pigeons and continued with the same breeds our father already had; for example, direct pigeons from Dirk van Dyck and Anton Ruitenberg. Furthermore, we obtain reinforcement each year from the best fanciers of that moment, without sparing a euro, as long as they are good pigeons!”

The breeding
Gerrit: “We start selecting the pairs in early December, looking at the build of the pigeon, the eye, and the pedigrees. We only breed from pigeons that meet our criteria in these areas and mainly focus on line breeding. Experience has taught us that the best pigeons are bred through line breeding, as evidenced by reports from fanciers who have obtained pigeons from us or our father. We believe that an inbred pigeon is also better able to be crossed with another strain. We always say: fanciers can do the crossing themselves, we don't need to do that for them. But of course, we also don’t shy away from simply pairing good x good!”
Medical
Regarding treatments, vaccinations, and inoculations, everything is done through Gobel-Van der Sluis. Immediately after weaning, Gerrit and Wessel themselves vaccinate all young pigeons with a combination vaccine from Van der Sluis, namely the PMV-Circo-Adeno vaccine: “We are very satisfied with this because despite a large number of young being bred, we rarely hear that a pigeon has a relapse or becomes ill.”
The young pigeons later receive the mandatory PMV vaccination from the veterinarian himself.
Goal for the coming years
Our objective for the coming years is to continue building on the breeding loft that has already proven itself in a short time, and to ensure that our pigeons continue to fly early prizes in the racing flights.
