This year, 15,578 pigeons were entered for Barcelona (5,819 Belgian, 4,515 Dutch, 3,678 French, 1,233 German, 333 English, and 20 Luxembourgish pigeons).
Due to the extreme heat, additional precautions were taken by the BV/EB, in consultation and after approval from the KBDB:
- The baskets were stacked a maximum of 7 high and 4 fewer per truck.
- Thus, the Belgian, French, German, English, and Luxembourgish pigeons are distributed over 5 trucks instead of 4. (The Dutch pigeons are transported by their own means).
- The pigeons were immediately provided with fresh water upon arrival at the collection point, and the lights on the trucks remained on for another hour so that all pigeons had sufficient opportunity to drink.
- Extra attention was also paid to providing water to the pigeons during transport.
- And at the release site, the municipal authorities of Vilanova-del-Vallès, at the request of the Catalan pigeon federation, provided a connection to the municipal water supply to refill the water tanks and possibly cool the trucks further.

Thanks to excellent communication with our Belgian colleagues, the border crossing to Spain went particularly smoothly. We ultimately did not have to wait longer than five minutes. Then we traveled together in convoy.
At 14:30 hours we arrived at the release point. The temperature here is 34 degrees, but thanks to a strong southern wind, it blows nicely through. This provides the necessary cooling for both human and animal.
FB Section 9 - East Netherlands Tue July 1 Stop in the shade on the way to Spain
Yesterday, we made a pleasant and well-deserved stop on our way to Spain. At a gas station, we could fill up fresh water for the pigeons. We found a nice sheltered spot under a canopy with solar panels, where it remained pleasant despite the summer temperatures.
In the shade, the pigeons received their care and a good meal while we also took the time to eat and drink. Everything went smoothly.
After a good night's rest, we stayed on site, waiting for the Belgian colleagues. Once they joined us, we continued the trip in a column towards the Spanish border. According to the guidelines of the Catalan pigeon federation, we can only cross the border as one convoy with live animals. A nice collaboration in the interest of both man and animal!
Just a few more hours of driving, and then we arrive in Barcelona! [🕊️] [🇪🇸]
FB Section 9 - East Netherlands Tue July 3 On the way to Barcelona – everything calm in the truck
We are well on our way to Barcelona, the Queen flight of the year. In the trailer of Section 5, which we have with us as Section 9, there are 229 baskets with a total of 4,515 pigeons.
The trailer has room for more baskets, but according to the heat protocol, it is not fully loaded – in the interest of air circulation and the welfare of the pigeons.
Along the way, the pigeons have constant access to water via the well-known blue bowls. Currently, we are stopping in the shade somewhere in the northeast of France. It's about 32 degrees there, with a pleasant east wind.
The pigeons are calmly resting in the basket, drinking well, and appearing fit. Coming night we continue the journey towards Barcelona.
FB Section 9 - East Netherlands Tue July 3 Barcelona 2025 – The Queen flight has departed
Under tropical conditions, the transport departed for Barcelona this evening, the undisputed Queen flight of the season. Taking into account the heat protocol, we headed south – a journey full of tradition, tension, and expectations.
The first stop was in Borne, where a real "Barcelona club" is now active. There, 200 of the 306 pigeons deployed from Section 9 were entered. A wonderful turnout of enthusiasts who know what character flights mean.
In Randwijk, the pigeons from Sections 8, 10, and 11 were then picked up. After that, the transport continued towards Streefkerk, with another stop along the way to pick up the pigeons from Section 7.
In Streefkerk, the rest of the Netherlands was brought together. The reception and entry there were again exemplary – thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers, everything went smoothly.
In total, 4,515 pigeons from the Netherlands are en route to Barcelona. The baskets are closed, and the journey has begun. Barcelona is alive. The Queen flight 2025 is on its way.
